How UK corporation tax actually works now

From 1 April 2023 the small profits rate is 19% on profits up to £50,000 and the main rate is 25% on profits over £250,000. Between £50k and £250k a marginal relief slice applies, giving an effective rate that rises smoothly from 19% to 25%. The thresholds are divided by the number of associated companies, so a group of three Ltds shares £16,667 / £83,333 thresholds - not £50k / £250k each. We map your group structure carefully to avoid surprise tax bills.

    Claims most accountants miss

Full Expensing - 100% relief on new qualifying plant and machinery. Annual Investment Allowance - £1m of relief on qualifying capex. R&D tax credits - even modest software, process or product development can qualify (we'll tell you honestly if it doesn't). Structures and Buildings Allowance - 3% straight-line for commercial property fit-out. Patent Box - 10% effective rate on profits from patented inventions. We review every client's eligibility annually.

    Filing, payment and HMRC enquiries

Your CT600 is due 12 months after year-end, with the tax payable 9 months and 1 day after year-end (or in quarterly instalments for large companies). Late filing = £100 penalty rising to £1,000+ for repeat offenders. Late payment interest is currently 7.75%. We file early - usually within 4 weeks of receiving your year-end figures - so you have plenty of time to plan the payment. If HMRC opens a CT enquiry, we handle the entire process on your behalf under our Fee Protection cover.

    Frequently asked questions

How much does CT600 filing cost?+

From on request for a dormant or simple micro-entity. Most trading SMEs sit between £750 and on request including statutory accounts. R&D claims are quoted separately, usually as a percentage of the benefit secured.

Can you do R&D tax credits even if my main accountant files the CT600?+

Yes. We can prepare the R&D claim and supporting technical narrative, then liaise with your accountant for the amended CT600.

What records do I need to keep?+

HMRC require company tax records for 6 years from the end of the accounting period. We keep digital copies on our portal so you always have a backup.

    When are quarterly instalments due?+

If profits exceed £1.5m (divided by associated companies), CT is paid in 4 quarterly instalments starting 6 months 13 days after the period begins. We model this for clients approaching the threshold.
